New Cobra 29 Getting HOT after ERF2030 final mod

Post by gundoctor »

I installed the ERF 2030 with the other required parts in a brand new Cobra 29 NW LTD Classic. The new final (ERF2030) now starts to heat up immediately after the radio is powered up. The heat sink got so hot I branded my palm before I realized it.
I followed the directions in the app. note exactly, removing and adding parts. Anyway, I have rechecked all my solder joints for any bleedover shorts. I have also rechecked the placement and removal of everthing. It all seems to be as per the application note from EKL. Any ideas anyone?

L14

I did some more research online and I think my prob. may be L14. I completely removed it. Maybe I was supposed to leave the coil of L14 in place, only remove the slug.

That was it. Thanks. Had to put in another ERF20303 though. The excessive heat fried the other one. Oh well. A $2.75 mistake.
