Your opinion on Antennas

Anything out there today similar to the Big Stick, or any good all around base antenna, height is not a problem, width is a little tight, I think beams are out of the question. Also if i get into Ham is there a one size fits all antenna, cb and ham.

I looked at Solarcon, Patriot, Bandit, SIRIO GPA 27-45, SIRTEL S 2000 GOLDEN, PT99 Proton and so on. You all have so much more experience and are up on the latest gear.

hello fellow michigander my self i would go with the maco V5/8 its tune able for 11 meters and 10 meters as well as other bands but tune it for one and use a antenna tuner for the rest of the bands

I'm in the same boat as you. I have a loaded vertical whip with radial leads and top hat. Now that I have this mounted; I'm wondering if I shouldn't have spent more planning on the antenna. The antenna I use is a mobile 67" Master Blaster on a 11' aluminum paint stick as a mast using a 3 way mirror mount to secure and ground the antenna. I don't have much room either for 45 degree radials or anything that gets too close to gutter pipes. I found that 2- 104" pcs of 12g high tensile wire clamped to my upper mast gave me enough reflective ground plane to get out as far as 30 miles on a clear day with just a peaked radio. I trimmed the 104" wires maybe an inch or two to get it dialed in.
I too am interested in Ham bands but; Think I'll pass for now as these guys seem real stuffy about thier radios. I might play on the export CB channels on 10 meters in which case; I might have to adjust my antenna lenght a tad for good SWR. Let me know if you try any of those antennas you mentioned. I too would like to know how they measure up

Trying out the Bandit II 3 6 foot fiberglass sections, the top section has a loaded coil. Mounted to a pipe that is attached to a former Tenna-Rotor, rotor disconnected. Height is about 60 feet from ground to tip. Just about ready to hook up base unit, looking for a way to get coax into house, older house, aluminum siding, plaster walls and ceilings, don't want to destroy this old farm house which we are restoring now. Any suggestions most appreciated.

I think the best thing to do is put in a jack on the inside wall like your cable company or phone company does. All you do is get a 5/16 drill about a foot long at the handware store and drill through the wall from the outside and then terminate the coax end leaving enough wire to pass through the wall and make your connection. Make sure to seal the outside with RTV so water can't get in through any gaps. Also check and double check for wires before you drill. I would use a stud finder and drill between two studs. I used an existing hole from an unused cable TV jack and it worked out nice and clean. I even was able to use the cover plate from the old TV/cable just drilling the hole out bigger for a female connector.

Any how; Sounds like your up there @ 60'! Your line of site should realy be nice. Are you in hills/mountains?

As for me, I'd go with the maco V5/8 as well.

Imax 2000 (with groundplane kit) or Sirio 827 both have a superwide bandwidth, excellent performance & stand up well to the riggors of a hard winter. The Sirio works well on 20 meters too & can be tuned anywhere between 30Mhz & 14Mhz with an ATU although it's efficiency is reduced the further away you get from it's resonant frequency
