Help with SBE Console V

Post by 521 Houston »

I am having some difficulty with an SBE Console V. The radio shows normal output and receive on AM, but very low TX on upper and lower SSB. Also, I have no receive audio on SSB. I have checked the alignment, and all seems to be on the proper frequencies per the test points. I've seen other Console V's listed on the net with similar problems with the SSB side, but never saw any info on what could be causing it or how to repair it. The Console V (CB-40) is basically the same radio as the mobile version Sidebander V (CB-39). Can anyone supply any info or point me towards what may be the problem with the SSB side of this radio? It's in almost mint condition inside and out cosmetically, and I really would like to repair it. Thanks!

SBE Console V

Post by Rick »

This is usually due to bad electrolytic capacitors, last year I repaired a SBE Console V and changed 18 caps and 6 resistors. There radios are now getting very old. Check caps around the voltage regulator.

I wonder if that fixed this guys SSB output problem?
Although i realise this is an old thread, I have just bought the same model radio as a bit of a project myself.
Mine is 18 channels though (AU Version)
Once again, its in great condition but is low on SSB TX output.
A.M seems fine, as does RX.
Seems like a common fault with these old girls perhaps?
