I got one for the techs out there. Help needed!!!!

Post by King Mudduck »

I just got a nice 250 maverick base amp today and it works great. Also got a nice Cobra 1000 with echo and a channel kit installed that works great as well. Now the weird thing. I can tune my Yaesu FT 101EE ( this is the radio i use most ) down to a 3 watt key swinging to 20 watts pep and it drives the amp just fine, seeing a little over 600 watts. But the Cobra 1000 with a 3 watt key swinging to a little past 20 watts will not make the amp swing forward at all! I'm using the same jumpers, meter and everything but the amp just will not work with the Cobra. It will key up and show a 150 to 200 watt dead key but has forward swing at all, and that makes no since to me!!! The amp works fine with 5 other radios that i have here but it wont with the Cobra,

Someone help me out here. I have never seen anything like this before and it's got me stumped:?

Does the cobra have high swr output protection? Could be that its kicking in (i.e. reducing the output power) early due to some problem or effect between the radio and the amplifier. Just a guess unfortunately. Is the audio recieved on another rig distorted at all?

Isn't 3 watts dead key with 20 pep overmodulating? I don't really use AM at all but it does sound a bit much to me. Anyway perhaps you can tell me :)

Well the thing i have noticed is this. The 20 watt swing was mesuared with the meter set on pep. Changing it to AVE showed only about a half a watt forward swing. The key is really closer to 3 watts so it's only swinging forward just a half a watt. Thats why it's not driving the amp i'm sure.
