What type of fiber glass antenna is it and how long is your coaxal cable? How old is the coaxal cable? The ground wire problem I had one with my truck I took a hose clamp the kind that you can adjust and a wire I put the hose clamp on the out side of the pl259 and put the wire under the hose clamp and tighten it down till it would not move and ran the wire to the body the wire I'm talking about is not the coaxal cable its an extra ground on my setup cause my swr was high to.I have about 18ft of coaxal cable on my setup and I have 1.2 match with the 102" steel whip.

The adapter has a star washer under it.Big one with it .
Under this star is where I hook up the ground ,12 or 14 gauge wire .
Slotts in the spaces of the star ... look man no metal.
This picks up the outside metal of the adapter .
Coax one side Thread 24 for ant screw thread ..add extra washer (flat)
Too the side if fiberglass,Largest you can find ...johhn

Do not devide the ground, leave it one twisted stran ,wrap around the washer a small loop.

KEEP THEM Seperated...

Now on a WHIP you have a ball mount , under the mount on the inside attach the Ground too one of the 3- nuts & bolts ,use lock nuts ,no
lock washers (they loosen up) You want this permement..
The other end of the ground gose to frame.
then frame too neg battery...
