The Palomar amp you have is a 2 transistor amp, and if memory serves me right (I could be wrong) it was good for about 150ish or so PEP on SSB.

Those old Palomars were a good amp, they had proper biasing so they ran pretty clean, with little channel splatter.

If I had to choose, I'd go with the Palomar, that will produce cleaner power. The newer amps like that little Comet 200 have inferior or no biasing at all, which will get you more output, but at the same time, can make you sound dirty (overmodulated) and will cause channel splatter.

RM Italy amps are junk, very poorly made, same with those new "Palomar" amps they have running around Ebay these days, also garbage. Neither of these amps don't really have the proper biasing to the transistors, so they tend to sound bad on SSB.

If you want a good box, get yourself a Texas Star DX350, DX400, or DX500. These are well biased, class A/B so they will sound clean on SSB as well as AM/FM. Yeah, you're gonna pay a bit for these, but the Texas Star amps are built well, and they sound good. Worth the greenies.
