ss 158edx-blue ssb recieve problem

hi folks,
i recently bough a superstar 158edx with blue display.
im happy with the performance of the radio but the ssb recieve seems very low?.
when i recieve an ssb signal on fm about s-5 when i switch to ssb the signal drops to nothing--local ssb signals remain strong?
tried turning up the ssb meter vr inside radio but no avail.
is there something i can turn-up or adjust in the radio to get readability on these low signals--they seem strong but dont move the needle on the s-meter.
i would welcome any help on this matter.

It sounds like your 158 has an AGC fault; I have come across this on a few 158.
It is not easy to fix without the right test gear.

could you explain what an agc problem is?
im not very good at the techy stuff i just dabble and do simple fixes and could you tell me if there is inherant design flaws in the 158.
