Try to be a bit more specific about the agc and ssb, is it that the agc is a bit fast? I have a ss158edx and my major complaint is that it drifts a lot between warm up and cold ,I should say more than a bit, a whole lot which is very annoying. The agc action is not as smooth as my old TRC451 which in my opinion has the smoothest agc I have ever seen in a cb radio. You might try directing this question to Rick who in my opinion has a great deal of knowledge about this radio.

hi bob,
the problem with the radio is very low recieve on ssb.
rick replied to an earlier question and said it was an agc fault possibly, but didnt explain what that was and if it could be fixed by myself.
i have noticed the radio does drift alot.
im just going to sell the radio and get another ss 3900 in my opinion a far superior machine.
thanks again ...john.

John, my 158 receives just fine on ssb but I did do a little tune up on it shortly after I got it.You have to be careful and take your time while doing this.Maybe Rick is away fishing as I know he is a great fisherman,he sent me a pic of a very large silver carp he caught once.I would not give up on the 158 just yet because it,s a great radio even though it has a few faults.

John all I did was to get a copy of the service manual form the ranger site, you can download it from there www.rangerusa.com and did a tune up using the manual ,read it carefully and take your time .Read read and read and it will show you which controls do what.As I said mine workd fine except for the freq drift which is very common for these type of radios.

Re: Superstar 158 EDX AGC fault.

There is not a stock AGC fault, I have come across varies AGC faults on the 6900 chassis.

The only way to find to find the AGC fault is with a RF signal generator while monitor the AGC line.

Normally, AGC issues cause severe signal overload when a strong signal is present, making it difficult to understand the audio.

He has weak rx signal and not overload.
Check d145 and c44.

hi folks,
this maybe clear matters up,
am and fm recieve is fine--no overload problems at all.
recently noticed high incoming ssb signals when propagation good but recieve still seems weak compared to my old ss-3900 crt version.
so in hindsight there might not be a problem with the ssb recieve but just common for this particular pcb.
im going to fix the echo board for full fm modulation so can anyone out there tell me what the printed value on the 1n8/1800pf capacitor reads
1.8/180? i live in the uk so component values may be different.
thank you to everybody who took the time to reply to my query and if i get stuck again i know i can rely on you guys.
thanks.....john.

It's 181
How far is it.
Twice it's length from halfway.
