New Mod Found To Expand Freq For Ranger RCI 2950 Later Model

Post by DXMONKEY »

Hi troops,

Just got a deal on a new old-stock Ranger RCI 2950. I understand that there was an original version and then a later one. This is probably a later one. These are great radios to make a combo CB- 10Meter ham rig. I am both a Ham and longtime CB'er.

There are plenty of existing mods on the net for the RCI 2950. All of them pretty much say the same thing. To expand coverage to include all of 11 meters plus the added feature of direct CB channelized operation, you are directed to remove bottom cover, see the main CPU board behind the front faceplate area, find jumper J2 and remove it or switch it to the other set on pins right next to it, and then press the CPU RESET button.

Well I racked my brains out for more than an hour looking for both a jumper J2 and the CPU reset button. I finally concluded that there wern't any. On this rig with board # EPT295013Z, the jumper is labeled J5 rather than J2 and there is no CPU Reset button.

Removing the jumper (solid black plastic located in the bottom right-hand corner of the board) gives you CB only. Moving the jumper over to the adjacent set of pins gives you 26.000-29.700 along with the handy CB channelized feature by pressing a button on the front panel. I just decided to try this as it was the only "easy lumper" I could spot at all. Rig works great now. I've had two of these in the past and there were purchase used and already modded.

These are really great radios and have a variety of other excellent improvement mods available for them.

Good luck! 73 DX MONKEY
