mirage 88

Post by yamiraptor »

I have a mirage 88, made in malaysia, Ept360014B.
When this radio is in the house in warm temps. it works fine. But when it is out in a mobile and it's cold. Michigan weather. Channels 1,3,4,6,9,11,12,14,17,19,20,22,25,26,28,30,32,34,36,38,40. Are all off by 10KHZ. Once it warms up in the house they all go back to normal. If for instance i'm on channel 19 while cold it will show 27.175. Now I can hit the 10KHZ jump button and it will show 27.185, but then I don't no longer have my 27.195. Also if it shows 27.175 on 19 cold and I hit the 10KHZ button, and it goes to 27.185 it will still rx and tx no problem. Once warmed up everything works fine and I do get my channel 19 27.185 back and the 10KHZ jump works too 27.195. I think I snagged a good one. I could use some help please. Any help would be great. Thanks guys. Have a great day.

Thanks for the info Rick. I pulled it already but I don't have a 14.010 crystal. I ordered one today so once I get it i'll have to see what happens. I'll let you know how it comes out. Thanks again. Have a great day.

Hey there Rick!
I replaced crystal x2. No change. After pushing around,I found that the 9pin plug that is on the little board with the channel switch was shorting out. I pulled the switch with the board and found out that all 9 solder joints were cracked. resolder all points and the freq. is back on track. Put the radio back together. Now the audio don't work. It will key up to normal watts. but no swing. The pa. don't work. The needle has movement and swings up when keyed. The noise blanker don't work. It sounds like the noise blanker is off and has alot of air static. It's the same way on all channels. When people are talking the rx sounds like they are all tight sounding. Not clear as should be. Usb,ssb are also no audio. I wouldn't think that soldering the 9pins and changing the crystal would take me to this problem. I checked the audio chip and here's the voltage.

The original fault you describe was a typical crystal fault, that why it is always best to give some history with the fault.

As for the faults, you have how it would be best to check all wiring from controls to PCB and look for broken tracks.

Hello Rick!
I went back to scratch and did somemore investigating. Your right I found another solder issue. Everything looks to be in order. Freq. is back also and no more 10khz off on the channels. Audio is back and rx is clear. I'll put it back in the truck and see if it stays stable in the cold. Thanks again sir for your time and help. Have a great day.
