Have you tried it on a homebase twig with a power supply and how are powering it in your car you will need 12v source straight from battery if poss and not through the cig socket (9v) could not be enough juice getting through also stupid question you havent knocked the variable power on it at all and o you have put this in the wrong section

transmit needle barly moves

Post by KING KONG »

a bit more info from my first post..
power suppy..sharmans model ps.30m 35 amp max ciggy lighter 10 amps it has 2 meters volts //amps
should the meter on the power supply for amps move like the volt meter iee the needle move to so many amps etc as the needle on mine stays low down and barley moves.
olso i noticed that when i attach the swr meter to the rig that barley moves only when u release the mic key it flickers both,, olso i tryed and put a dummy load on the end of the swr meter but did not light on the fm 4 watts
as the light buld is fine and worling oopss ive only found out that my son had used a mobile burner those things that kick the power up and destry the rig as this is really the sons rig the lincoln as he got it for birthday present a good6 years or so and it had to be the hi power rig he wanted lol and i was conned into buying myself a rig the superstar 3900 which he dully commandeered lol so it has been used with 1 of those mobile burners i only have the 1 twig the sirio 4000 hi power as im thinking could this be broke hence no tx needle moving up on signal meter on both radios i can hear squeels beeps etc slight chatter signal crap..and as stated earlier when i depress the mic key the needle should go up the way not down or barly move well im hoping the twig is at fault as ill have to try get accsess to 1 to try the twig but the other day i spoke to my son who was in the car few houses down could hear signal good 30+ but when i rf gained he went away when really he should have rf gained bk to 9 am i right to think that well i hope this helps in some way and tyvm for ure time fingers crossed its the twig lol

The first thing i would be trying is your power supply yes your amp meter should go up around the 5-8 mark it sounds odd that both radios are doing the same thing

im 100% sure he hasint as the solders are all new looking and he dont know how but he did use won of those burners a mobile linear for ssb am fm i think maybe he could have broken the first rig then got the other rig hooked it up and busted that too as could these with the rig own power be to much and fry those transistors but can broken final or driver give the symtom of hooking a rig next to it and transmitting a carrier into it and hearing the audio thru the unit and as i said earlier the needle not budging when keying as it should move even if u dont have a twig it should still key up ill get it some how

O.K. that is generally what happens when you run
a amp in line with high antenna s.w.r.,it blows the
rf finals and or driver..But first lets check the simple
stuff..Make sure that the cb/pa switch is in the cb mode.
Also make sure as the previous guy said, that you
are getting proper voltage..Cause just because it lights
up,doesnt mean its getting enough juice to key the unit.
Also check the mic, if it has a broken wire inside,it will
not key unit.

OK, and now for the solution to the problem before you beat yourself looking at these replies....

Remove the top cover from the radio, get a super small eyeglass repair screwdriver and gently turn the screw on top of the meter until the needle swings freely again. Tah-Dah... 30 years later and this still works, do you know how many guys have brought radios into my shop wanting me to replace a meter because the needle stopped swinging?
a bunch.

Thanks,

tx meter hardly oves

Problem here is that the Lincoln does not use an analog meter, its digital. He could attempt to turn the TX meter adjustment (might be R-117 if memory serves me correctly). If that does not work, then its a safe bet the final is dead.

tx meter hardly oves

As the Lincoln is using the high power 455 transistor that is very likely to have fried the linear amp, as the radio would have been putting out more power than most amps can handle, which in turn has probably weakened / blown the final in the Lincoln.

Try plugging the radio into the DC supply, and leave it turned off, see if the heatsink in the rear starts to warm up, if it does that is a bad sign, as that means the final is drawing power when it should not be.

Has you son tried to "tweak" the radio, I am sure he would have been tempted, these things use special bandpass filters in them, which are very sensitive, and if incorrectly tuned, can completely kill the TX output level, they should have stickers over them saying "DO NOT ADJUST" as they are factory set, and never need adjusting, if someone has changed them then you will need to get the radio to a decent repairman, someone with good experience working on the Lincolns, as the filters can be very hard to get back to factory specs.
