I think you've been misinformed, there are no darlington transistors in the 042 boarded Jackson.
Is the TX light coming on when you key the mike ?.

Heres something to try. Turn the radio circuit side up and turn it on. When the receive goes quiet, take an end of a toothbrush and start pushing down on the board in little areas of the board. I suspect that you have a cold solder joint somewhere. When you find the spot that makes the sound come up, hold it down with the toothbrush handle, unplug the radio from the power supply, then take the soldering iron and hit all the soldering pads for about a half of an inch around the area. Let all the soldering points cool. Remove the toothbrush, turn off the radio, plug the power back in, and then turn on the radio. This should solve your problem, if not, repeat the steps around that area. I known that this should solve your problem.
