Colt 444 knackered? :(

This rig seems to have a fault in that it's off frequency on most channels on all bands. I know it's ok on 10 and 16 on mid and high, but the rest are all over the place and I can't find them on my lafayette 1200FM. Any ideas?

Ron,
You have got the radio on FM haven't you with the switch pulled out for FM and in for AM. If your not in the correct mode it will sound off frequency. They are easy to adjust on that rig, each crystal has it's own adjustable capacitor next to each crystal on the sub board front left hand side of the radio.

On FM Ch 10 and 16 are fully audible and recieve fine on my laffy on FM. Any other channel and the FM sounds off frequency. Not tried it with the AM, but may do tonight.

Okay, I've now tested the colt and the laffy by the simple expedient of keying one up on a channel and listening to it on the other radio.
it's the same in AM and FM: That is to say, one of the radio's is definetly off frequency, but I know not which one. On the laffy I'll TX and the audio is on the channel above the one I'm TXing on, but nothing on the channel it SHOULD be recieving on. On the colt these are just garbled (sound like sideband). I need to find a frequency counter from somewhere

Ron,
That could be the PLL or a bad connection at the channel switch pins to the PCB but I'd change the PLL first.

Sussed: The Laffy had one of the tracks from the PLL to the channel selector switch cut (something missed by my rig doctor). Made a connection and now all the channels go where they should

All I need to do now is get the display to show 41-80 on hi, and change the clarifier to a KC Slide

Ideas?

Ron,
Most people want the radio to display 1 to 40 on all the bands you're the first one to want to put it back to 41 to 80 on high band.
You should find the wires comming from the band switch, they will have been removed from the channel switch and one of the solder lands they came from will have been soldered together with the black earth wire. If i remember correct the wires are green and blue.

to drop it onto frequency isnt that hard you need 2 diodes and 2 pieces of wire take the brown wire from pin 3 on the cristal board put 2 diodes into the pcb where you took the brown wire from so the line points to the board connect the brown wire to one of the diodes the remaining diode standing up run it to the center pole of a switch then run a wire from an outer pole of the switch to the 9v on the voltage reg and it will drop from the 5 to the 2 it will be 1 kc of but no one will know the difference
