OK, so I have a Cobra 19 DXIII CB installed in my truck.

It has always seemed to work fine in CB mode.

I bought one of these PA horns to mount under the hood to use as a PA speaker.

Both the CB and the PA horn have the usual standard mini jacks on them. Trouble is, when I try to use it, all I get is a horrible piercing feedback whine when I press the mic. Doesn't matter what volume I have the CB set to.

At first I thought there was something wrong with the speaker, but when I plug it into the external speaker jack of the CB, it works fine. It even worked when I plugged my Ipod headphone jack into it. So there can't be anything wrong with the speaker.

So then I assumed it was my CB that was broke. My dad has the identical model, so I tried his out and it did the exact same thing.

So either the Cobra 19 DXIII doesn't work as a PA system, or I am missing something simple.

I didn't have the speaker anywhere near the mic, so it's not like it was picking up feedback through that.

Anyone ever hear of this happening?

Unfortunately it happens a lot with PA speakers.
The PA speaker needs to be a long way from the mike. It can even cause feedback if the PA speaker is on the outside of the vehicle.
Finding a good spot that doesn't give feedback can be tricky.

Less tricky solutions include using a so-called "noise-cancelling" mike. They tend to reduce feedback.

Even less tricky method is to use a radio with a mike gain knob. That Cobra model doesn't have one. Turn the mike gain down far enough, the howl will stop.

If you put the speaker far enough from the mike, the feedback howl will stop. Trouble starts when the speaker needs to be two car lengths away from the mike. Kinda tricky to do.
