Cobra 200GTL DX Tuning problem

Post by FatFreddy »

Hello everyone, just joined the forum. I have posted this at some UK forums, but there might be some more experts here. :)

I recently bought a Cobra 200GTL DX. So far I like it, it pulls the stations in and I am getting good reports but I find it impossible to tune between the channels on side band. If I stay to the fives it is great, but if someone wants to QSY to a zero I can't get to them. Has anyone else had this problem, or any advice for me.

Have you tried the mod from Rick. I think you will find it on the redmax site.

Hi James, thanks for the reply. I have had a search about the forums here, and noticed Rick is the serious radio guru, but I can't find the mod you are meaning. What is the Redmax site? I noticed on my search that you have a 200GTL , are you able to tune to zeros?

Cheers...Jim

How is the Cat. I will see if I can find the mod I did for the guys on Redmax, I would give you the site URL but it has now closed down.

Hi Rick, thanks for the reply. I know this radio is unpopular, but I am smitten with it. Apart from the zeros thing, which is a biggie. I have none of the other problems I hear about, it sucks the signals in better than my Licoln or George ever do and gets out really well. The audio was sounding less well to local stations who know me, but a Cobra M75 power mike fixed that.

I have heard the problem is that the clarifier can't swing far enough, not sure if that's right though, the counter shows 6.2 khz either way, but I don't trust it. Any advice you can give me would be appreciated. I am not knowledgable enough to fix it myself, but knowing the problem is a good start.

Cheers, Jim :)

As you are not knowledgeable enough to do the job, I would suggest sending it to some one like Cobraworxshopz http://cobraworxshopz.com/ I cannot say if there are good or bad, as I have not had any dealings with them.

Hi Rick, I emailed Cobraworxshopz almost a week ago, got no response. I should phone them now I guess. My first hope when posting was that some one else who has the same problem would be able to tell me why, and what they did about it. I have asked in 3 forums, I know now that not getting the zero frequencies is normal behavior once the radio has been expanded, but can't find out if a fix exists for the problem.

Thanks again...Jim

As James told you, I did a mod to sort the problem out, but as you are not knowledgeable enough to do the job that why I suggest Cobraworxshopz, I would do the job for you but I have a waiting list at the moment of 12 weeks. Most guys I know that repair radios will not touch the Cobra 200GTL DX they all say it to much trouble.

Ok Rick, thanks for the advice. I didn't realise you did this for a living. You must be good if you have a 12 week waiting list

No worries, I will give Cobraworxshopz a chase up call.
