hello techs.i will try this again.possiblly i didnt give enough info.is the reason i have gotten no response on this subject.anyway it is a binatone long ranger walkie talkie,,it is a 40 channel.the model number is 01/8635 .it has all the u.k..frequencies in it.later i will be trying to get info,on converting it to u.s. frequencies..but right now i am just interested in getting it powered up.it will not power up.i have tryed different 12 volt dc adapators.also have hooked it directly to 13.8 volt dc.via my power supply.i have checked the reverse polarity diode.it is not shorted,it seems fine.i do not see any burnt foil traces.and have found no loose connections.someone on another forum told me it sounded like the voltage regulator had went bye bye..but i had read somewhere,where a shorted final could also give a no power sympton.dont know just pulling at straws right now..i am not fimilar with this u.k..radio..if any one has any advice,info.or maybe has had one of these things with similar trouble..i would appreciate your help......your friend jimmy keys/ramblingman

The reason you have probably not had any replays is that there will be very few guys that have ever seen one of there radios let a lone worked on one, it was never a poplar radio. The first think to check is the AVR which is TR12 (2SC1815) which has a 6.2 volt Zener on the Base, so it should read like so Base 6.2 vdc Collector the input voltage and the Emitter 6 to 7 vdc. Also check pin 6 of the audio IC it should be about 5 to 6 vdc and pin 16 of the PLL (MSM5807) it should also be about 5 to 6 vdc. Common fault is the PTT switch. Hope this helps. Hi there i have a box of these radios 3X 40 channel types and 2 X 12 channel types working and a few not working.The reason for this is that in 1981/2 when they were first available i had one of the 12 channel sets and about 5 years ago when i saw these on an internet auction i just felt compelled to buy them.
Anyway to cut a long story short if you would like a working example send me your mail address and will tell you how much the postage will be there will be no charge for the radio.
Just to let you know although they are quite a primative design by modern standards i had endless hours of fun with mine and on a good day was able to talk for many miles.I think this was down to the metal case on the radio but i couldn't be sure.I actually used to buy these radios from a local chain store remove the very nice and valuable intermediate frequency filter and then take them back to the store for a refund ,probably shouldn't have mentioned that but what the hell.
Anyway if you do a search for the PLL that is fitted to these radios you will see that they are readily modded to work on other frequency bands
