I have an old Cobra 146 GTL that found in the closet. Tried it out. Found that when I transmit my voice only goes about 1/2 half mile but the needle on the receiving radio keeps moving at farther distances, say 4 miles down the road. The needle keeps moving but no sound from the 146 radio in being recieved at that distance. The only time I can here my 146 is when I get about 1/2 mile of the transmitting radio. No it is not the antennas nor the surrounding obstacles that is blocking the signal. Just no sound from 1/2 mile to the end of the needle stops moving on the receiving radio which is about 4 miles. This is an area with no trees and no other transmitting radios within 20 miles. I am out here in the clear with this radio. I am thinking it could be the driver or something in the radio because only the voice fades out. It does not have a dynamike knob. It does have a voice lock but I have tried using that and it doesn't make that much difference. I think it is like the delta tune on a 29.
Any suggestions or thoughts????????
Thanks!!!

Re: Cobra 146 GTL Low TX range.
What is the SWR on channel 20?
What is the dead key output power on a power meter with a dummy load.

Re: Cobra 146 GTL Low TX range.
I would try a second radio from your 20 just to make sure its not your setup.
As from what you say about your SWR and power it seams OK.
It could be the mic maybe worth try a second mic just in case it is the mic.
