Cobra 148GTL low power & poor Audio on SSB

Post by captron »

I have a Cobra 148GTL that dead-keys 4watts & swings to 10 watts on AM with Good Audio quality but only has 8-10 out on SSB with bad Audio Reports on SSB both USB & LSB. I tried to increase the SSB power out by turning up the SSB ALC but it still will not do more than 10 watts on SSB and has very bad Audio. I have re-set the bias on the driver and final. I can live with only 10 watts out on SSB But the Audio problem on SSB will not do. A frequency mod has been done and works. As well as the Clairifier being opened and works. The recievr and xmit frequencys are on frequency. Thank You for your help if you know. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Ron

It sounds like the VCO is unstable; this happens some times when the clarifier is unlocked try putting clarifier back to stock to see in this helps with the problem, also check chassis to PCB coupling caps. If you have a scope you would find this fault very quickly.
