First thing to do is know what you are doing - a search of this site will give you all the details:
1) You are going to have to increase it by a factor of 10 (to 30 watts) to make noticeable difference. If you increase it to 4 or 6 watts, it will make NO difference to your signal and range.
2) How are you measuring this "3 watts"? You need a good (i.e. Bird) or reasonable (i.e Welz, Revex) power meter, the cheapie ones are good for measuring SWR only, and NOT power or modulation.
3) Even with a quality meter, you can only get an accurate reading when it is used with a dummy load, NOT an antenna. And I'm talking about a proper one (has black fins on it), not one of those cheap light bulb loads.
It's completely impractical / uneconomic to mod an AM set for 30 watts plus. Either buy an amplifier (illegal for CB) or a "10 meter" SSB unit converted to CB (also illegal for CB) if you want more range. If you want to do it legally, get your ham ticket.
